IMBA Update 73: May 2010

Welcome to the IMBA UK Members update.

Many thanks to everyone who sent in information for this month's update.

If you have information, news or events for the next email update, please by Tuesday 22nd June. I look forward to hearing from you.

A Message from the Chair

Many of you responded positively to our request for ideas about the future direction of IMBA UK and one of the most important things to you was for IMBA to share best practice and good ideas to help you in developing the future of mountain biking locally and across the UK.

We are pleased to announce that we are hosting our annual get together in the UK's most famous mountain bike destination, the Tweed Valley in the south of Scotland. At what is perhaps one of the cradles of UK mountain biking we are drawing together experts, advocates, volunteers and riders to offer a stunning weekend programme to help you and those you work with to continue to maintain and improve mountain biking in the UK.

As IMBA chair I'm proud of the work we started here in Scotland working with the Forestry Commission and it seems appropriate that we come together and look to the future whilst enjoying the tremendous leaps we have made.

The main conference programme takes place on 10th September, so put the date in your diary. To register your interest, and a full conference programme and booking form will be sent out to you in due course.

IMBA UK Conference Tweed Valley (Glentress, Innerleithen) Scotland 2010

On Friday the 10th September IMBA UK is proud to be hosting a major UK off-road conference at the Macdonald Cardona Hotel, in the heart of 7stanes country. The conference "From the roots to the shoots" looks at the major emerging trends within the sphere of UK based off-road cycling.

The programme will be hosted by Mike Van Able the CEO of IMBA US, and will feature major input from Scottish Enterprise who together with the 7stanes team will be looking at biking in the South of Scotland and its importance to the regional economy. Then moving to the south west of England, Malcolm Bell the head of Tourism will bring us up to date with the massive £4million 1SW project.

We will also be covering the importance of properly organised and motivated volunteers and how they contribute to the success of sustainable mountain bike based projects and trails. There will be an opportunity on Saturday to work alongside the Glentress trail fairies for those who wish to do so.

We will also be presenting Dr Charlie Foster a senior research fellow at Oxford University who has undertaken some compelling work on the importance that cycling can make to encouraging fitness and how it can help counter the rise in childhood obesity.

The afternoon sessions will give you the opportunity to look in detail at some of the mornings themes with experts and project leaders from around the UK. There will be a choice between the strategic view and more practical examples.

The conference will open on the Thursday evening with a Ceilidh, and provides ample opportunities for site visits to the famous 7stanes trail centres of Glentress and Innerleithen. We will also give you the chance to explore some of those trails on bikes with local riders.

This promises to be a must attend conference for all those actively interested in promoting and managing mountain biking and will be based in the superbly comfortable Macdonald Cardrona hotel, beneath the slopes of Innerleithen's famous downhill courses.

So join us for the whole event, for an unforgettable weekend, or sign up as a day delegate. The first 20 IMBA UK members to book will qualify for a 10% discount on the conference fee. and a full conference programme and booking form will be sent out to you in due course.

Exmoor Explorer Ride - 8th August

Entries are now open for the famous 2010 Exmoor Explorer, probably the largest Mountain Bike Marathon in the country. This year's event starts from Wheddon Cross, Exmoor at 10am.

National Forest Cycle Centre

Eight miles of safe off-road family-friendly trails and a spacious visitor centre and caf&e_acute; will make the new National Forest Cycle Centre just the place for a brilliant family day out.

Planning permission has been successfully secured and construction work will start in July 2010. The main partners in the project, the National Forest Company (NFC) and Forestry Commission, are planning a grand opening in spring 2011.

"This is going to be a cracking place for a great day's cycling," said Alan Leather, who is co-ordinating the project development at the NFC. "People will be able to bring their own cycles, or hire them from the centre's own bike hire and repair workshop. Youngsters will be able to learn to ride, practice their off-road skills or even get an introduction to racing, while families enjoy surfaced trails and explore the attractive woodlands. The centre is just north of Leicester and south of Derby so its within easy reach for people living across the midlands".

Funding from the 6Cs Strategic Green Infrastructure Growth Fund and the Leicester & Leicestershire Sub-regional Investment Programme has enabled the development of this major new facility in The National Forest.

Byways & Bridleways Trust Saves Lake District Bridleway From Closure

In 2008 the Lake District National Park Authority made an order to downgrade 1190 metres of Bridleway 206008 at Bassenthwaite to the status of public footpath. The Kendal Group of the Ramblers Association supported this attack on horse and bicycle access to the countryside, but the Byways and Bridleways Trust objected to the order on the ground that there is no good evidence that a mistake occurred when the 'definitive map of public rights of way' was surveyed and made, approaching sixty years ago now.

At the time of the original survey and the 'draft definitive map' (1953) there was clearly some argument as to whether the route was a footpath, or a bridleway, but in the end it was recorded as a public bridleway. To overturn this recorded status in 2010 requires 'cogent evidence' that a mistake was made fifty-seven years ago, and in her decision letter of 24 May, Inspector Susan Doran finds that there is no such evidence.

The stiles and fences currently obstructing bridleway 206008 (which runs eastwards from Bassenthwaite village to join Bridleway 206015 at High Close) will now have to be removed, or replaced by approved gates. Alan Kind, the editor of the Trust's journal "Byway and Bridleway" comments: "Coming on the heels of the Trust's recent successes in preventing the downgrading of public bridleways at Narberth, in Wales, and at Skeeby and Applegarth in North Yorkshire, we are pleased with this decision. Since the 'evil trinity' of downgrading decisions at Jack Lane (North Yorkshire), Rufforth (York) and Binsey (Lake District), we have worked hard to develop a proper understanding of the complex law in this area of work. We hope that all highway authorities will now give proper consideration to the requirement for both 'new evidence' and 'cogent evidence' before making any more bridleway downgrading orders."

The Byways & Bridleways Trust web site has a substantial free resource for those battling obstruction, downgrading and neglect of minor roads and bridleways.
